Sepia: When Mum Has Simply Had Enough

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that goes beyond being tired.
It's the exhaustion of the woman who has been needed by everyone for years.
The children need her. Her partner needs her. Work needs her. The household needs her.
Everyone wants something.

And somewhere along the way, she has disappeared from her own list.
This is one of the pictures that can bring Sepia to mind in Homeopathy.
Not simply a tired mother who needs a good night's sleep.
This is the woman who has been giving, giving, giving, until eventually she thinks:
"I honestly don't care anymore."

The Sepia mother
She may love her family deeply, but she's reached the point where another request, another question or another demand feels like one thing too many.
She wants to be left alone.
She may fantasize about getting in the car and driving somewhere where nobody knows her and nobody needs anything from her.
She can feel angry, irritable and resentful, followed by guilt for feeling that way.
And then there's the physical exhaustion.

She's given her body to pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, motherhood and years of caring for others.
Eventually, she may feel completely wrung out.

Keynotes that may point towards Sepia
  • Wants to be left alone
  • Feels angry, irritable or resentful
  • "Don't touch me" or aversion to affection
  • Feels overwhelmed by the constant demands of family
  • Emotional flatness or indifference towards loved ones
  • Feels disconnected from her partner or children
  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Feels exhausted, depleted and worn out
  • Wants her independence and identity back
  • Feels like she's been giving to everyone and has nothing left for herself
  • May feel better with vigorous exercise or movement
  • Can have a strong hormonal or menopausal component

"I want my old self back."
This is perhaps one of the most powerful aspects of the Sepia picture.
She doesn't necessarily want to leave her family.
She wants to find herself again.
Her energy. Her identity. Her sexuality. Her enthusiasm. Her sense of who she was before everyone else's needs became her priority.
Sepia isn't about being a bad mother.
It can be about being a woman who has cared for everyone else for so long that the well has finally run dry.

Potency and dosage guidelines:
If the Sepia picture strongly matches your symptoms, a simple short-term trial may be appropriate.
Sepia 30C: one dose once daily for up to 7 days.
If you notice a clear improvement, stop taking the remedy and observe. You don't need to continue taking it simply because you haven't reached seven days.
If your symptoms persist, change significantly, or you're unsure whether Sepia is the right remedy, that's where individualised prescribing can make all the difference.

Feeling like this?
If you're thinking, "This is me. This is EXACTLY me," but Sepia isn't helping, don't keep throwing remedies at yourself.
Your symptom picture may be pointing towards something completely different.
Work with me and I'll look at the whole picture to help identify the remedy that best fits YOU.
Because you don't have to spend the rest of your life feeling like the woman who has nothing left to give.
